The Babia Gora Mountain

Part of the Babia Gora range with its highest peak (Diablak, 1725m) creates the Babiogorski National Park, included in the UNESCO Programme of "Man and Biosphere Reserves".

This wild mountain in its lower zone is covered with Carpathian beech forests where fir, beech and spruces reach 40m of height and over 350cm in perimeter. This primeval character decides about their outstanding value, especially because these great beech and spruce forests have never been commercially exploited. The upper mountain zone is dominated by high and straight spruce trees with well developed branches. Area above this is occupied by dwarf pine community with admixture of rowan and herbal beds.

Whole mountain is cut through by numerous streams and waste rock. The streams flow down into the north, being springs for the Vistula river. Some of biggers ones are: Jalowiec, Jaworzynka, Rybny Potok and Markowy Potok. There are also several ponds, the largest is Mokry Stawek (about 450sqm) which was formed about 5 000 years ago. The area is great for watching owls and birds of rocky mountains.

It is great destination for one who likes to hike the mountains and looks for Crossbills, Nutcracker, Alpine Accentor, Ring Ouzel, Capercaillie, Ural Owl, Eagle Owl, Golden Eagle, Grey-headed and Three-toed Woodpeckers.
